| Civil marriage in Canada question |
[18 Feb 2008|06:50pm] |
MODS: please remove if not an appropriate post.
I am planning a trip to Canada in early June, and again early next year. I have asked my Sweetie to marry me, and am wondering if there is a residency requirement.
Does anyone know?
Thanks!

Sorry to post something so NYC-specific, but this seemed like a good place to get the word out. Please feel free to repost this anywhere you think it should be shared. (And I'm sorry for any cross-posting you encounter.)
Thanks, Aviva
Do you know that the Lesbian Sex Mafia's party etiquette requires some transwomen to keep their genitals covered during our play parties? The current party etiquette reads:
"If you have a bio-penis, please keep it covered." (-LSM Website, November 15, 2007)
We are a group of cisgender, genderqueer and transgender LSM members and allies who believe this policy needs to be struck down. LSM stands for safe, sane, consensual and confidential sex and play for ALL women – past, present and future. If you're interested in learning more and joining us, write your contact information below.
You can help make LSM a place that welcomes all women.

Hi everyone, During March and April this year, I will be joining other young people on a bus trip across the country to open a dialogue about queer equality, human rights for queer people, and queer spirituality on college campuses. You can check out my personal equality ride page here: http://www.soulforce.org/michael_ide . We will be visiting conservative, Christian campuses. Some have invited us to speak with their students and faculty, others have not. We will be visiting regardless. We are going in the spirit of non-violence and love, not to preach but rather to discuss and bring our humanity into the discussion. I am personally excited that we are bringing this action home to Mississippi with a visit to Mississippi College in Jackson. If any of you have contacts in Jackson or at MC, please let me know. Also, please forward this email to anyone you know who might be interested. For more information about the Equality Ride, please visit. http://www.equalityride.org (they will be updating the site soon) The equality ride is an action taking by SoulForce: http://www.soulforce.org Peace, Michael "Enku" Ide

| An appeal |
[21 Jan 2007|04:42pm] |
Firstly, I apologize if this sort of post isn’t allowed, but I found this community to be relevant to my search, so here I am.

I run gsa_lj, one of the largest and fastest growing gay-straight alliances on LiveJournal. However, despite our initial mission to be a support network for youth, the focus of the community has evolved. Our members are largely educated, mature, and eager to expand their horizons. Previous outreach efforts have been made to teachers, parents, and those of faith in an effort to diversify our ranks.
Personally, I'm a gay Republican with a libertarian streak, but most of our members are liberal.
Discussion of relevant politics and current events are common, but the community is multi-faceted. I’m attempting to further increase the level of intellectual discourse, by focusing on more politically interested individuals. We’re always looking to better ourselves.
I ask that you join our efforts, if you’re interested in such issues. At the very least, check out the community. See the type of posts and comments that are present. Read our user-info page, and see for yourself why our members are satisfied. I have a feeling you’ll be impressed.
If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me.

| Anti-Police Brutality Picket Line Tomorrow |
[28 Nov 2006|10:25am] |
|
To all the NYC/NJ/LI peoples:
I don't know if you're aware of this, but on Halloween two Black men, one of them trans, were beaten and arrested by a bunch of White cops.
At 4:30 am, on the corner of Hudson and Christopher by the pizza place, a police van drove up to a group of Blacks and Latinos trying to clear the crowd. As she was walking away, one 20 year-old Black woman commented(not to the officers directly) about how disrespectful a female officer was in giving the order. The female officer, along with Officer Toccos, a male, got out of the van and started an argument with the young woman.
Officer Toccos, WITHOUT REASON, PUSHED THE YOUNG WOMAN IN HER BREASTS, FORCING HER BACKWARDS, prompting Shakur Trammel, a 23 year-old trans man to ask Toccos for his badge number.
Toccos punched Trammel in the face repeatedly and threw the college student on top of the police van and began choking him with a nightstick. A rampage ensued. According to witnesses, about 4-6 mostly White cops KICKED AND PUNCHED Trammel as he was on the ground. Toccos continuously beat Trammel with his nightstick, covering the young man with bruises and DISLOCATING his left elbow. Trammel was EVENTUALLY THROWN INTO A POLICE VAN.
About 20-30 people witnessed this. The police officers went into the crowd and BEGAN BEATING another man, possibly in his 30's, FOR EXPRESSING HIS OUTRAGE at the attack.
Both men were arrested, along with another Black woman who refused to follow the officers' commands to disperse.
Once in the 6th Precinct, Trammel informed his arresting officer of his status as a Trans man and requested to be placed in a cell seperate from other men. This REQUEST WAS IGNORED. In the same cell were two other injured and bleeding men, one Black the other Latino, WHO ALSO REPORTED THAT THEY WERE ASSAULTED BY THE POLICE.
All of the men were in need of medical attention and demanded for an hour they be taken to a hospital. ONE OF THE MEN WERE TAKEN FROM THE CELL BY POLICE ARMED WITH A STUN GUN.
So, PLEASE COME TO THE ANTI-POLICE BRUTALITY CONFERENCE AND PICKET LINE

New York, New Mexico come out on top in new Web site that ranks states by rights
June 01, 2006
Of the 50 states, New York and New Mexico do the best job of respecting LGBT and reproductive rights, while South Dakota does the worst, according to a new Web site. Those are among the findings on the interactive map unveiled Wednesday and jointly developed by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the international reproductive health organization Ipas, and the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Health Collective.

| Equality |
[10 Mar 2006|08:59am] |
Cross Posted:
Last night was the monthly meeting of the Sonoma Chapter of Equality California and we are starting to get some younger folks involved. We currently have students from Sonoma State University and Santa Rosa Junior College. As a matter of fact, the president of the BIGLASS QTS (Bisexual, Intersex, Gay, Lesbian Alliance of Sonoma State, Questioning, Transgender, Straight) club is now a member of our chapter. Very cool.
I believe it is with the youth our equality lies. The unmitigated passion and sense of justice young adults have are vital to any civil rights cause. One has to be taught to hate, to believe that one group deserves more rights than others. Prejudice and bigotry are learned behaviors. As trite as the saying may be, "Hate is not a family value."
Just 6 months ago, the California Legislature made history by passing equal marriage legislation in both the State Senate and State Assembly. I was able to be a part of that history. On September 6th, I lobbied many members of the State Assembly, carrying a framed photo of Rose, and putting a human face on the issue. I told my story again and again. Sometimes I was rebuffed. Sometimes I was listened to. Once I was invited into the Senior Advisor's office, and told my story as he took notes and tears welled in his eyes.
I always ended my story with the statement that the legislation would probably never benefit me directly, as I could not concieve of loving another woman as deeply as I loved Rose.
Then I met my Sweet One for coffee. Two days later, I met her for a concert and coffee. I was head over heels in love. The twinkle in her eyes, her intelligence, and her sweet nature just drew me to her. Now I cannot imagine not having her in my life. Now my fight is even more personal.

| Western European Liberal Democracy Is Dying |
[09 Jan 2006|03:54pm] |
The author of this column is coming from a much more socially conservative position than I am, but his essential point seems irrefutable. Western European liberal democracy is dying, being replaced by attrition with Islamic elements with no regard for our once-cherished freedoms and institutions.
It's a snide lefty bromide (one that I'm guilty of using myself) that the very people who we don't want to reproduce are breeding like rabbits. But what happens when that tendency plays itself out on the macro scale?

| The Grinch Who Stole Gay Marriage - taken from myspace |
[19 Dec 2005|08:03pm] |
Every Gay down in Gayville liked Gay Marriage a lot...... But the Grinch, who lived just east of Gayville, did NOT!!
The Grinch hated happy Gays! The whole Marriage season! Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason. It could be his head wasn't screwed on just right. It could be, perhaps, his Florsheims were too tight. But I think the most likely reason of all was His heart and brain were two sizes too small.
"And they're buying their tuxes!" he snarled with a sneer, "Tomorrow's the first Gay Wedding! It's practically here!" Then he growled, with his Grinch fingers nervously drumming, "I MUST find some way to stop Gay Marriage from coming!"
For, tomorrow, he knew... All the Gay girls and boys would wake bright and early. They'd rush for their vows! And then! Oh, the Joys! Oh, the Joys!
And THEN they'd do something he liked least of all! Every Gay down in Gayville the tall and the small, would stand close together, all happy and blissing. They'd stand hand-in-hand. And the Gays would start kissing!
"I MUST stop Gay Marriage from coming! ...But HOW?"
Then he got an idea! An awful idea! THE GRINCH GOT A WONDERFUL, AWFUL IDEA!
"I know what to do!" The Grinch laughed in his throat. And he went to his closet, grabbed his sheet and his hood. And he chuckled, and clucked, with a great Grinchy word! "With this beard and this cross, I look just like our Lord!"
"All I need is a Scripture..." The Grinch looked around. But, true Scripture is scarce, there was none to be found. Did that stop the old Grinch...? No! The Grinch simply said, "With no Scripture on Marriage, I'll fake one instead!" "It's one man and one woman," the Grinch falsely said.
Then he broke in the courthouse. A rather tight pinch. But, if Georgie could do it, then so could the Grinch. The little Gay benefits hung in a row. "These bennies," he grinned, "are the first things to go!"
Then he slithered and slunk, with a smile most uncanny, around the whole room, and he took every benny! Health care for partners! Doctors for kiddies! Tax rights! Adoptions! Pensions and Wills! And he stuffed them in bags. Then the Grinch, with a chill, Stuffed all the bags, one by one, in his bill.
Then he slunk to the kitchen, and stole Wedding Cake. He cleaned out that icebox and made it look straight. He took the Gay-bar keys! He took the Gay Flag. Why, that Grinch even took their last Gay birdseed bag!
"And NOW!" grinned the Grinch, "I will pocket their Rings." And the Grinch grabbed the Rings, and he started to shove when he heard a small sound like the coo of a dove. He turned around fast, and off flew his hood. Little Lisa-Bi Gay behind him sadly stood. The Grinch had been caught by small Lisa-Bi. She stared at the Grinch and said, "My, oh, my, why?" "Why are you taking our Wedding Rings? WHY?"
But, you know, that old Grinch was so smart and so slick He thought up a lie, and he thought it up quick! "Why, my sweet little tot," the fake Shepherd sneered, "The judges are evil, the other states weird." "I'll fix the rings there and I'll bring them back here."
It was quarter past dawn... All the Gays, still a-bed, all the Gays still a-snooze when he packed up and fled. "Pooh-Pooh to the Gays!" he was grinch-ish-ly humming. "They're finding out now no Gay Marriage is coming!" "Their mouths will hang open a minute or two then the Gays down in Gayville will all cry Boo-Hoo!"
He stared down at Gayville! The Grinch popped his eyes! Then he shook! What he saw was a shocking surprise! Every Gay down in Gayville, the tall and the small, was kissing! Without any bennies at all! He HADN'T stopped Marriage from coming! IT CAME! Somehow or other, it came just the same!
And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling: "How could it be so?" "It came without lawyers, no papers to sort!" "It came without licenses, came without courts!" And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
"Maybe Marriage," he thought, "doesn't come from the court. Maybe Marriage...perhaps... comes right from the heart. Maybe Marriage comes from all the words the Gays say. Words like Husband, like Wedding, and Spouse who is Gay." And what happened then...? Well...in Gayville they say that the Grinch's small brain grew three sizes that day!
And the Gays had their Weddings. They promised for life. They swore to be faithful, to Wife and her Wife. The Husbands were happy, to each other they vowed To be Out and be Honest, be Gay and be Proud. They told all their neighbors and friends of their Spouse, They told of their Marriage and sharing their house. They said "We got Married." They shouted it loud. Their marital status was "Married and Proud."
And the minute his heart didn't feel quite so tight, He whizzed with his load through the bright morning light. And he brought back the rings, cake and Gay birdseed bags! And he... ...HE HIMSELF... hung the Gay Rainbow Flag! ... The Lord looked down, at the proud and the tall, and said "These are my children, and I love them all."
